Dick Devos, the husband of Betsy Devos, is on a mission to prevent the city-backed construction of the sports and convention arena in Grand Rapids. Not only would it be a poor investment with lots of squandered public funds, it will greatly affect the business district of the city.
In order to get organized, Mr. Devos had formed a group called Grand Action to launch the campaign against the construction project. Within this group, some of the biggest business owners in Michigan are backing his protest. They had also supported the previous construction of the DeVos Place Convention Center, the DeVos Performance Hall, and other associated business centers.
In addition to trying to turn the city around, Dick DeVos has always been challenging government policy when it has been under-delivering. As it may not be a surprise, the Devos family has been financially backing GOP candidates as the party reflects their vision for how government needs to be managed. Dick and his wife are especially interested in educational reform.
Since Betsy DeVos has had a relative amount of political sway, she has pushed for public funds to be invested into high-quality charter schools. The city centers around the United States are sadly rife with poverty and the quality of the schools fail to meet the international standard. Because of this, even minority families have been investing their time and money to get their kids into private or charter schools.
Meanwhile, in wealthy neighborhoods, public schools receive more funding and those from poor ZIP codes are forced to stay in their underfunded schools. It is no surprise that kids from poor schools are more likely to drop out, work menial labor jobs or even turn to a life of crime. This imbalance in the school system continues to perpetuate poverty in the worse neighborhoods of the country.
Fortunately, things are starting to turn around in some areas but it is mostly due to the free market taking action. Although pouring more money into the department of education or local municipalities is a sign of good virtue, it does not really help the problem in the big picture. Whether it is corruption or lack of empathy in the public school system, bureaucracy always gets in the way of good quality education.
Since the local government is quite lacking in aiding the poor, the Dick & Betsy DeVos Family Foundation is using private funds to get things done. For example, the couple spent $12.5 million of their own money to speed up the construction of the Spectrum Health System. They had also donated over $138 million in various public programs.
